The adjuster works as a one-man court using judicial and maritime expertise to settle disputes between parties involved in maritime casualties and to prepare average adjustments where all losses and disbursements in connection with such casualties are apportioned.
To obtain official authorisation the Danish average adjuster has to hold a Master's Degree in Law from a Danish university.

Activities

• Adjusting general average according to the York-Antwerp Rules
• Adjusting particular average claims on hull and machinery policies, cargo policies as well as loss of hire claims and various claims on other marine insurance policies including claims on liability policies
• Calculation and settlement of limited liability funds
• Apportionment of salvage awards between salvors and others entitled to participate in a salvage award
• Apportionment of compensation payable to, or by third parties and settlement with the insurers involved
• Calculation of freight pro rata itineris
• Adjusting claims on war risks policies
• Various calculations mentioned specifically in the Danish Maritime Code, art. 360 and 466
• Issuing opinions on matters of maritime law or marine insurance as well as acting as arbitrators in certain cases
